Hi everyone!
There were a few things I forgot to mention in my email yesterday because I was under a time constraint...
First of all, I described the complexity and difficulties of the metro system here. Well, I think it's also really important to point out the subways are the most efficient I’ve ever seen in any city I’ve ever visited. The subways come at least every 3 minutes, usually more often. Yet, they are always packed! Amazing to have so many subways, and so many people in them!
Also, there is very little English here, in case you did not gather that from my email yesterday. It is really difficult to get anybody to help you with anything complex, because very few people speak English here. Even in the hotel we're staying at which has lots of tourists... it's even difficult to find an English-speaking Russian here!
Souvenirs here are awesome and so cheap! I bought a large coin used in Russia, which dates back to 1773! The time of Catherine the Great! And it only cost $10! I also bought an old soviet army medal from WWII, awarded for excellent intelligence service on the front. There is so much antique and soviet stuff here, it's amazing. And they all want to sell it... like the want to get rid of it so that they aren't reminded of the soviet way anymore.
Like it was in Finland, it's pretty much light outside here all night long. It’s pretty cool, but I admit I’ve been having trouble sleeping because of it! It’s crazy waking up at 3 am and thinking it should be 8 or 9 am or something like that because it's so light outside!
The Russians are still a little naive about some things. For instance, the litter all over the place. When they buy Pepsi (Pepsi predominates here, where Coke predominates in most other countries!) on the streets, they leave the bottle on the ground. When we rode the train yesterday, a guy near us bought and ice cream in a wrapper, and then threw the wrapper out of the train window! I hope that they learn to stop littering soon!
Overall, we've liked St Petersburg. Today is our last day here. In a few hours we will board a train which will take us to Moscow... We will arrive there in the morning! I can't wait to see the Red Square, Kremlin, and St. Basil's Cathedral!
Well, I hope all of you are well! Thanks for reading my emails!
